In a country renowned for its vast and fascinating culture, history and heritage, the cities of France – Paris, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Marseille to name a few – are veritable treasure troves just waiting to be explored.
Begin your French city tour in the Basque Country, on the Atlantic coast, in Biarritz, a resort offering long stretches of fine sand, world-famous surf spots and sense of style. Bordeaux, the world’s wine capital, oozes timeless charm with its stunning period architecture and grand crus among the best on the planet, to enjoy in moderation. Nantes, with its fantastic Machines of the Isle of Nantes (Machines de l’Île) and superbly well-preserved Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, is an ideal destination when travelling with the family in tow. Next, make your way up to Brest at the northern tip of Brittany where a string of breathtaking sea vistas await. Down in the south of France, Toulon is best known for its tucked-away coves and military port steeped in history. The oh-so-chic cities of Nice, on the Côte d’Azur, otherwise known as the French Riviera, and Montpellier, in Occitania, are an invitation to experience the slow and gentle Mediterranean pace of life. Ajaccio and Bastia, in Corsica, are gateways to some of the most spectacular scenery in all of France and an island culture unlike any other. Last but not least, Marseille, where the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica stands watch over the Vieux-Port, is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city, and a perfect springboard for exploring the beauty spots further afield, from the dreamy calanques to the Provençal hills.
As if any introduction were needed, there’s Paris, the city of light whose incredible museums, Eiffel Tower and historic districts – Montmartre, the Marais to name a couple – have to be seen at least once in anyone’s lifetime. Lyon, well known for its bouchons, traditional restaurants, and traboules, covered passageways, is nothing to be sneezed at either: the city is packed with surprises and discoveries, not least its fascinating Confluences Museum and the stunning hilltop district of Fourvière. In Toulouse, the “Pink City”, soak up the charm of the Canal de Midi, the festive vibes of Place du Capitole and the majesty of the Saint-Sernin Basilica. End your tour in Strasbourg, the seat of the European Parliament, whose half-timbered houses, pretty canals and fantastic local fare will enchant you in ways that only France can.
